Arturo Melendez Dies After Being Hit by Driver at El Casco Street and Glenoaks Boulevard
SYLMAR, CA (April 20, 2020) — A 50-year-old man died Friday after a driver struck him at a church at El Casco Street and Glenoaks Boulevard.
According to police, the volunteer died while assisting a food drive at First Southern Baptist Church in Sylmar.
Loved ones are remembering Arturo Franco Melendez who lost his life around 7:45 a.m. that Friday.
In the investigation, authorities determined that Melendez was loading food into the trunk of a car. After that, a driver in a Ford Expedition SUV suddenly propelled about 30 to 40 feet forward, pinning Melendez against the vehicle.
Sgt. Kurt Smith with the Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division believes the driver might have mistaken the brake for the gas pedal. In addition, the 77-year-old driver appeared to have been distraught following the crash.
Shortly after, paramedics brought Melendez to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. However, no other information is known.
