Desmond King Fatally Struck by Suspected DUI Driver on Bancroft Avenue Near Fairfax Avenue
OAKLAND, CA (March 31, 2020) — A suspected DUI driver fatally struck an Oakland pedestrian on Bancroft Avenue near Fairfax Avenue Sunday evening.
According to the Alameda County coroner’s office, 29-year-old Desmond King died in the 6:51 p.m. accident that also left three people with injuries. Police say they have arrested the 29-year-old driver on suspicion of DUI, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death or injury.
The incident befell Sunday evening when King, as well as three other men ages 50, 45 and 39, was standing on a sidewalk in the 5400 block of Bancroft Avenue. At some point, a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu traveling westbound on Bancroft Avenue struck a parked vehicle along the north curb before striking the men.
Unfortunately, due to the severity of his injuries, King died at the scene. The three other victims sustained injuries as well, one of whom faces critical injuries at this time.
The suspect tried fleeing the scene on foot, but officers quickly arrested him a short time later. During the investigation, they learned impairment played a role.
