1 Dead, 7 Injured in DUI Broadside Crash at Claribel Road [Riverbank, CA]
DUI Two-Car Accident at Claribel and Langwoth Roads Kills 1, Injures 7
RIVERBANK, CA (December 7, 2020)—One person died, and seven others sustained injuries following Saturday’s DUI crash at Claribel and Langwoth roads.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 10:10 p.m. at a four-way stop sign.
CHP officers described the event in detail; they said a 19-year-old Modesto man driving a 2012 Nissan sedan was heading westbound on Claribel Road. The driver, Nicolas Villela IV, reportedly failed to stop at the four-way stop sign and broadsided a northbound 2019 Chevrolet sedan.
Deborah Mendez, 19, of Riverbank, had just completed a stop at the intersection when Villela slammed into her 2019 Chevrolet sedan. Subsequently, both vehicles struck a power pole and came to a rest on the north shoulder of Claribel Road.
Tragically, the crash killed Mendez’s right front seat passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Oakdale whose identity authorities have yet to release.
As a result of the accident, Mendez sustained major injuries and received care at Doctors Medical Center. A CHP Modesto office spokesman said she suffered a broken pelvis, internal injuries and a fractured rib.
Meanwhile, Villela, who had five passengers in his car, sustained back pain and abrasions to his face and shoulder.
Following the crash, police officers booked him into a public safety center after medical staff treated him at Memorial Medical Center. Per reports, he faces multiple charges, including battery on an officer.
As for his passengers, they suffered a range of injuries.
Ivan Villela, an 18-year-old from Modesto, sustained a broken right arm and cuts to his left hand. While he received treatment at a Kaiser Hospital in Modesto, Memorial Medical Center staff treated 18-year-old Chloe Songmouan for cuts to her head.
In addition, 18-year-old Devin Redden of Modesto complained of pain and received care at Memorial, while 18-year-old Eleyna Alarcon, of Ceres, sustained abrasions and leg pain.
Reports, however, did not specify the injuries Villela’s fifth passenger, an 18-year-old, sustained.
