One Killed, One Arrested in Fatal DUI Crash on Walnut Avenue in Winton
WINTON, CA (December 3, 2020) – Police arrested Jose Guizar Jr. after a fatal DUI crash on Walnut Avenue on Sunday evening.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened near Central Avenue at approximately 9:00 PM.
Based on a report, the 23-year-old Winton man was driving a 2008 Lexus IS 350 eastbound on Walnut when he lost control of the vehicle. Subsequently, he crossed onto the path of oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a westbound 2001 Honda Civic. As a result, the engine compartment of the Honda caught fire in the incident.
Emergency crews confirmed that the driver of the Honda died at the scene. Authorities only identified him as a 33-year-old Atwater man. In addition, a passenger of the Honda, Candice McCarty, 34, of Winton, suffered major injuries. Passersby pulled her out of the vehicle and an ambulance took her to a hospital.
Later on, officials arrested Guizar Jr. on suspicion of felony DUI. However, the crash remains under investigation.
