Richard Murphy Collides With Driver on South Avenue Near Mary Avenue
CORNING, CA (March 24, 2020) — A head-on collision on South Avenue near Mary Avenue turned fatal Sunday night, tragically killing a driver and injuring another.
According to a release, the deadly incident that transpired around 10:30 p.m. Sunday remains under investigation.
The collision unfolded when a 2011 Nissan Altima, driven by a 45-year-old man, was traveling eastbound on South Avenue. For unknown reasons, the unidentified driver allowed his Nissan to travel into the oncoming westbound lane. There, the Nissan plowed into a 2015 Mack semi-truck pulling a tanker trailer full of diesel, driven by 64-year-old Richard L. Murphy.
In the aftermath, both vehicles came to a stop and blocked both lanes of South Avenue.
Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced the Nissan driver deceased at the scene. Murphy, of Chico, who although dodged a trip to the hospital suffered minor injuries.
In their investigation, California Highway Patrol confirmed that both drivers used their seatbelts at the time of impact. Nonetheless, details pertaining to the cause or whether impairment played a role in the crash remain unclear.
