Man Ejected and Killed in Ht-and-Run Crash on Highway 570 near the Orilla Verde Recreation Area in Taos
TAOS, NM (July 31, 2020) – Police arrested Andrew Lopez after a fatal rollover crash on Highway 570 on Friday afternoon.
According to the Taos County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at Taos Junction Bridge, which crosses the Rio Grande by the Orilla Verde Recreation Area around 1:15 AM.
Based on a report, the 21-year-old La Puebla man was driving near the bridge when his vehicle rolled over. However, officials dd not yet release the details that led to the accident.
Emergency crews said the impact ejected a 36-year-old man from Española from the car. They later pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Based on an assessment, they determined the passenger was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident. In addition, three juveniles suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Lopez initially left the scene. Police officers later located and detained him at Holy Cross Medical Center after treatment. Finally, they charged him with homicide by vehicle and other counts related to the crash.
