James Watkins Detained after Fatal DUI Pedestrian Crash
PETALUMA, CA (September 24, 2020) — A 53-year-old man died Tuesday evening after being struck by a DUI driver on South McDowell Boulevard near Baywood Drive.
According to police, 41-year-old James Watkins struck the pedestrian as he drove his 2011 white Toyota Prius southbound on South McDowell Boulevard.
At approximately 7:00 p.m., his car went over the sidewalk and struck the man before entering the roundabout intersection.
Further reports indicated that two off-duty officers and an off-duty nurse rendered aid to the injured pedestrian; however, he died at Petaluma Valley Hospital shortly after.
As for Watkins, of Cotati, he escaped injury but was suspected of driving while under the influence.
Upon determining that DUI had played a factor, officers booked him into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility.
