PROSSER, WA (March 23, 2020)—A DUI, hit-and-run collision on Highway 221 near Highway 22 turned fatal Friday evening.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident occurred on the rural part of the highway, just south of Prosser.
Authorities determined that 35-year-old Santiago Acosta Navarrate was traveling north on Highway 221 around 5:45 p.m. About two miles south of Prosser along the two-lane highway, Navarrate allowed his Honda Civic to cross into the southbound lane for unknown reasons. There, his Civic struck a northbound Subaru Legacy, driven by 43-year-old Ronald C. Jones.

Officers arrested him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI.
Navarrate, who although had been strapped in a seatbelt, died in the collision. Authorities sifting through evidence have yet to determine why he crossed into oncoming traffic in the first place.
