Robert Ellis Escapes Injury Following Fatal Highway 108 Crash [Jamestown, CA]
Robert Ellis Involved in Deadly Fiery Highway 108 Collision Near Tulloch Road
JAMESTOWN, CA (August 3, 2020)—A two-vehicle fiery accident on Highway 108 near Tulloch Road resulted in one fatality.
According to Steve Machado with the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 10:40 a.m. between Oakdale and Sonora.
In the split lanes that start just east of the Stanislaus-Tuolumne county line, an eastbound 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV tried passing up a 2019 Freightliner at a high rate of speed.
During this attempt, the right side of the Chevrolet struck the Freightliner Cascadia big rig-trailer combo, causing the Fresno driver of the Chevy to steer out of control. At some point, a second impact occurred, causing the Freightliner and the Chevrolet Tahoe to catch on fire.
Robert Ellis, the Redding man operating the Freightliner, became successful in exiting his vehicle to safety; however, the Chevy driver sustained fatal injuries and died shortly thereafter.
Multiple fire engines arrived to the scene to help extinguish a vegetation fire on the side of the road.
At this time, authorities have not determined a clear-cut answer as to what drove the accident. Thus far, alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as possible factors. However, an investigation is ongoing.
