Jesus Tamariz Crashes Big Rig into Feather River [Tobin, CA]
Jesus Tamariz Crashes Big Rig on Highway 70 Near Tobin Bridge
TOBIN, CA (July 28, 2020) – A 48-year-old man survived a big rig crash along Highway 70 near Tobin Bridge Friday afternoon.
Around 4:05 p.m., a 2018 Freightliner pulling a 2005 box trailer of empty pallets was heading westbound on Highway 70.
Its driver – 48-year-old Jesus Tamariz – tried navigating a left curve on the road, but the right tires of the big rig veered onto the north shoulder. The Ceres man subsequently made an unsafe turn to the left, which caused the Freightliner to lose traction.
From there, the big rig traveled across both lanes of the highway and slammed into a guardrail on the south shoulder before overturning down a steep embankment.
The big rig landed on several rocks in the Feather River, its cab submerging into the water and the box trailer coming to a rest on the rocks.
Tamariz and his passenger safely self-extricating themselves from the cab.
Authorities arrived shortly thereafter and determined that Tamariz was driving without a Class A endorsement and with a suspended motor carrier permit.
According to investigations, the Freightliner fuel tank ruptured and leaked diesel fuel into the river. However, PG&E, CalFire and the Butte County Hazmat response team were able to contain the hazardous material.
