RANCHOS DE TAOS, NM (July 3, 2020) — A single-vehicle DUI accident Sunday night on Highway 240 near Highway 68 left a 39-year-old woman dead.
According to New Mexico State Police Officers, police responded to the scene around 7 p.m. Upon arriving, investigators learned that 48-year-old Desiderio Garcia was at the wheel of the car when it struck a tree near Calle Martinez.
As a result of the accident, 39-year-old Lisa Marie Day — Garcia’s passenger — suffered fatal injuries.
According to investigations, alcohol has been confirmed as a contributing source in the crash and seat belts do not appear to have been properly used.
Shortly after, police arrested the El Prado man and booked him into the Taos County Adult Detention Center on homicide by vehicle.
However, the crash remains under investigation and anyone with information should call local authorities.
