17-Year-Old Samantha Valdez Injured in Fatal Crash on Highway 99 [Delano, CA]
Male Passenger Killed, Teen Driver Airlifted After DUI Hit-and-Run in Delano
DELANO, CA (May 29, 2020) – Police identified Samantha Valdez as the victim who suffered injuries a fiery crash on Highway 99 on Friday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened at approximately 3:10 PM.
A white 1999 Ford pickup was speeding down the highway when it slammed into the rear of Valdez’s sedan. As a result, the 17-year-old’s car then hit a third vehicle driven by a 66-year-old Pixley woman. Later on, the sedan caught fire in the incident. The driver of the Ford fled the scene on foot.
Crews pronounced a male passenger dead at the scene. Good Samaritans were able to rescue Valdez from the burning car. Crews airlifted the girl to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield for treatment of injuries. The Pixley woman of the third vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Police suspect that DUI was a factor in the crash. No other details are available. However, police continue to investigate the case.
