Officers Arrest Abbas Shariff Following Deadly Bicycle Accident
SAN DIEGO, CA (May 28, 2020) — A man in his 40s died in Tuesday’s hit-and-run bicycle accident on University Avenue near Aragon Drive.
According to reports, the 7:00 p.m. crash happened in the 6600 block of University Avenue.
Authorities say 30-year-old Abbas Karama Shariff drove a red Toyota Prius, which struck the bicyclist. Shariff reportedly exited his vehicle and picked up the victim before getting back into his car and driving away.
Moments later, paramedics ushered the victim to a nearby hospital where he died; his name has been withheld pending family notification.
Although Shariff fled, police were successful in locating his Prius abandoned in the 6800 block of El Cajon Boulevard. Just after 9 p.m., officers arrested Shariff following a pedestrian stop along Central Avenue in Lemon Grove.
Police booked Shariff into San Diego Central jail early Wednesday morning.
To the family and friends of the victim, we hope you find strength and support in those around you. We’d like to express our condolences to you.
