Bicyclist Injured in Police Chase Crash at Effie Street and Sussex Way [Fresno, CA]
Cyclist Hurt After Being Hit by Hit-and-Run DUI Driver in Fresno
FRESNO, CA (May 14, 2020) — A hit-and-run DUI driver struck and injured a bicyclist Wednesday at Effie Street and Sussex Way.
According to news reports, the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. when deputies tried stopping a Chevy Tahoe SUV for possible DUI.
Sometime during the chase, the Chevy Tahoe tried turning the corner at North Effie Street and East Sussex Way. As a result, it struck a parked car and a bicyclist.
Officials stated that the driver attempted to turn into an apartment complex. However, it struck the building instead, leaving a gaping hole in the wall.
Officers became successful in arresting the teen driver of the Chevy on DUI and hit-and-run charges. Police say both the driver and passenger are juveniles.
As for the cyclist, paramedics took that person to Community Regional Medical Center for unknown injuries as Fresno Fire inspected the building for structural damage. Fortunately, the building sustained no electrical or plumbing damage, allowing residents to stay in their homes.
There are many defensive and safe driving tips to keep in mind and exercise. Many of these include obeying the posted speed limit while making turns and lane changes with caution. In addition, being mindful of pedestrians and motorcyclists while following traffic signs and lights.
