Martez Begay Arrested for DUI After Fatal Accident on 20th Street [Phoenix, AZ]
Martez Begay Jailed Following Deadly DUI Crash on North 20th Street Near East Highland Avenue
PHOENIX, AZ (April 24, 2020) — A 30-year-old motorcyclist died after a DUI driver struck her on North 20th Street near East Highland Avenue Wednesday night.
According to investigators, 23-year-old Martez Lyle Begay had failed to yield to the right of way while making a turn into a private driveway in his 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Around 9:30 p.m., as he steered from southbound 20th Street into the private driveway, he collided with a 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driven by a 30-year-old woman.
Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the gravely injured victim to a hospital where she died.
Neither Begay nor his 37-year-old passenger was injured in the accident.
However, Begay faces other consequences; during the investigation, police learned that he failed his sobriety test, which showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.195. Officers subsequently arrested and booked him on one count of manslaughter.
