Six Injured in Passenger Van Crash on Highway 166 [Santa Maria, CA]
Passenger Van Crashes on Highway 166 near Gifford Rancho Road in Santa Maria
SANTA MARIA, CA (December 12, 2020) – At least six people suffered injuries in a crash involving a passenger van on Highway 166 on Saturday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened near Gifford Rancho Road at approximately 02:15 PM.
Based on a report, the van was traveling on the highway prior to the crash. While trying to pass another vehicle, it drove off the highway and over the side of a cliff.
CAL FIRE, Santa Maria Fire, and Los Padres National Forest personnel responded to the scene. County Fire said they found the van about 50 feet down in the riverbed. As a result, two people sustained serious injuries, one had moderate injuries, and three others had minor injuries. Medics sent one victim with serious injuries to Cottage Hospital by CalStar helicopter and another one by a ground ambulance. In addition, they transported the other victims to Marian Regional Medical Center.
CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
