9-Year-Old Matthew Calles Dies in Pedestrian Crash on 36th Street [Phoenix, AZ]
9-Year-Old Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle on 36th Street near Thomas Road in Phoenix
PHOENIX, AZ (November 17, 2020) – Police identified 9-year-old Matthew Calles as the boy who died in a pedestrian crash on 36th Street on Tuesday night.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near Thomas Road shortly before 6:00 PM.
Based on a report, the victim was trying to cross the street at the time of the crash. Due to unknown reasons, he was not in a marked crosswalk. Subsequently, a car that was traveling southbound on 36th came and struck him.
As a result, the boy sustained serious injuries in the incident. Emergency crews transported him to a hospital, where he later died.
Phoenix Police said the driver of the car stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officers believe that impairment was not a factor in the crash. However, they continue to investigate the case.
