Karl Lutz Killed, Mechthild Lutz Hospitalized in Oak Harbor Car Crash
OAK HARBOR, WA (November 17, 2020) — A 93-year-old man died in a two-vehicle accident Thursday evening on Southeast Regatta Drive at Southeast 8th Avenue.
According to a State Trooper, a southbound 1998 Mercedes 420 sedan, driven by Karl H. Lutz of Oak Harbor, crashed into a 2003 Silverado pickup truck.
Per reports, 52-year-old Shawn Hamlin, of Oak Harbor, tried attempting a left-hand turn onto Regatta Drive in his Silverado; however, things took a turn for the worst as Lutz’s Mercedes struck Hamlin’s eastbound pickup.
As a result of the 5:30 p.m. crash, Karl Lutz and his 86-year-old passenger, Mechthild Lutz of Oak Harbor, sustained major injuries.
Soon after, paramedics transported both of them to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center, where Karl Lutz, who had neglected to wear a seatbelt, died.
Meanwhile, Hamlin avoid injury in the accident and stayed at the scene for police investigations.
At this point, the accident showed no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. However, if anyone can help authorities determine the events that took place, please contact the CHP.
