Two Troopers Injured in Patrol Vehicle Crash on 5 Freeway [Lakewood, WA]
Lakewood Patrol Vehicle Crash on 5 Freeway near Berkeley Street
LAKEWOOD, WA (November 5, 2020) – Two troopers suffered injuries in a crash involving patrol vehicles on southbound 5 Freeway on Thursday morning.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened near Berkeley Street shortly after 2:30 AM.
Based on a report, the first trooper arrived on a scene where a driver fell asleep and struck a barrier. Subsequently, a second trooper arriving at the scene lost control of his patrol car and smashed into the first trooper’s SUV. Consequently, the first car collided with the civilian’s car.
As a result, both troopers suffered minor injuries in the incident. Emergency crews transported the victims to St. Clare Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the civilian was not hurt in the crash.
After an assessment, WSP said troopers’ inexperience and the rain were likely factors in the second crash. However, they do not have additional information to share. At this point, an investigation is ongoing.
When it is raining, avoid speeding and distracted driving because these often lead to a crash. However, manage your speed and slow down in areas near intersections to avoid getting into an accident.
