DPS Trooper’s Patrol Vehicle Involved in Fatal Crash on Santan Freeway near Kyrene Road in Chandler
CHANDLER, AZ (October 31, 2020) – Police identified Matthew Haughey and Krystin Phillips as the victims who died in a rear-end crash on Santan Freeway on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near Kyrene Road around 2:00 PM.
Based on a report, the victims’ car collided with a DPS trooper’s patrol vehicle. Due to unknown reasons, the couple’s vehicle rear-ended the patrol vehicle parked on the left shoulder while the trooper was investigating another crash in the area. Authorities said the trooper was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
As a result, 27-year-old Haughey and 26-year-old Phillips died at the scene.
In addition, emergency crews transported the DPS trooper to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
No details about the cause of the crash were immediately available. However, officials continue to investigate the case.
