Speeding Leads to Rear-End Crash on Highway 246 at Tularosa Road in Lompoc

 
LOMPOC, CA (October 31, 2020) – Police identified Dennis Smith as the driver who suffered injuries in a rear-end crash on Highway 246 on Saturday morning.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at Tularosa Road around 5:00 AM.
 
Based on a report, Smith, 57, of Lompoc was driving a Honda Accord when a Nissan Altima struck his car from behind. The impact caused the Accord to careen across the eastbound lanes and collide with a guardrail before coming to rest in the traffic lanes. Meanwhile, the Altima plunged down an embankment and came to rest about 150 feet off the roadway.
 
As a result, Smith sustained minor injuries in the incident. Paramedics transported him to Lompoc Valley Medical Center for treatment. In addition, the 28-year-old Lompoc man who was driving the Altima suffered a broken neck. An AMR ambulance sent him to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria in critical condition.
 
Upon assessment, officers learned that the Nissan Altima was driving at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash. However, the CHP is still investigating the cause of the crash.
