2 Killed in Chain-Reaction Crash on 80 Freeway Near Willow Avenue [Hercules, CA]
Woman, Man Die After Being Struck by Cars in Hercules
HERCULES, CA (October 26, 2020)—Two people died Friday night following a chain-reaction crash on 80 Freeway near Willow Avenue.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal incident happened around 8:20 p.m.
For unclear reasons, a disabled Honda sustained a flat tire in the No. 1 lane. Shortly after, an approaching Volkswagen Passat came to a complete stop behind the disabled Honda, but a black Honda Accord ended up crashing into the Passat.
From there, more cars became involved; a silver Honda Civic struck the black Honda Accord, and a blue Toyota Camry struck two people exchanging information near the center median.
According to investigators, the Toyota driver tried swerving to avoid hitting the cars but struck the people nearby instead.
Upon impact, a 35-year-old San Leandro woman was thrown to the eastbound lanes where multiple cars struck her, and the man landed in the center median of the 80 West Freeway.
Tragically, both victims died in the accident. In addition, two people in the Toyota Camry sustained minor injuries and sought hospital care shortly after the accident.
Currently, neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the accident but if anyone has more information, please contact the Contra Costa CHP at (925)646-4980.
We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to the friends and families of the victims.
