Charles Hatherill Struck and Injured by Vehicle on Highway 101 [Humboldt County, CA]
Caltrans Worker Hurt in Accident on Highway 101 in Humboldt County
HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA (October 7, 2020) – Police identified Charles Hatherill as the Caltrans worker who suffered injuries in an an accident while working on Highway 101 on Wednesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened just south of Indianola Cutoff Road around 5:40 AM.
Based on a report, the 46-year-old Eureka man was working in the southbound #2 lane of the highway as a privately contracted worker with Caltrans. The construction closed the #2 lane and diverted all traffic into the #1 lane. At that time, 65-year-old Paul Giacomini, of Fortuna, was driving a 2001 Dodge pickup south in the #1 lane.
As he approached several work trucks in the #2 lane, Hatherill stepped out into the path of the Dodge. Subsequently, the front-side of the Dodge struck the victim.
As a result, Hatherill had a complaint of minor pain. Emergency crews transported him to St. Joseph Hospital for further evaluation and treatment of his injuries.
