John Romero Killed, Anthony Macias Detained in Hit-and-Run Bicycle Crash at North Ventura Road and Teakwood Street
PORT HUENEME, CA (October 2, 2020) — A 40-year-old man died following Wednesday’s hit-and-run bicycle accident at North Ventura Road and Teakwood Street.
According to authorities, John Angel Romero perished around 5:30 a.m. The Port Hueneme man died of multiple blunt-force injuries after being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle.
Noting from preliminary investigations, officers say a silver sedan heading northbound on North Ventura Road struck Romero as he tried crossing eastbound at Teakwood Street. The driver, however, fled the scene failing to provide aid.
An hour later, 28-year-old Anthony Macias returned to the scene and underwent a sobriety test at the Port Hueneme Police Department station. As a result, police determined Macias had a blood alcohol level of nearly double the legal limit.
As for his vehicle, officers found it with major front-end damage, consistent with the collision, several blocks away from the crash site.
According to reports, he remains in custody at the county jail with a bail set to 1 million.
