Speeding Ends in Multi-Vehicle Crash on 5 Freeway [Olympia, WA]
Six Vehicles Involved in Crash on 5 Freeway near Maytown in Olympia
OLYMPIA, WA (September 24, 2020) – Police confirmed that a speeding vehicle caused a multi-vehicle crash on northbound 5 Freeway on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened just north of Maytown at about 12:26 PM.
Based on a report, a 2004 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 20-year-old Chehalis man was speeding on the freeway when it hit the jersey barrier on the left-hand shoulder. Subsequently, a 2005 Ford Explorer driven by a 73-year-old man then struck the Hyundai. At that time, a 2020 Volvo semi stopped to avoid the first two vehicles. However, a 2006 Peterbilt semi hauling a trailer struck it and caused it to hit the jersey barrier. A 2015 Nissan Leaf driven by a 63-year-old woman from Tumwater then hit the Peterbilt semi, and, lastly, a 2018 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 58-year-old man from Lake Oswego, Oregon hit the jersey barrier in the southbound lanes.
As a result, emergency crews reported one injury.
There was also a diesel spill on the scene. Because of this, the pile-up blocked both north- and southbound lanes of the freeway for nearly five hours.
