Suspected DUI Driver Involved in Fatal Crash on Main Street near Gilbert Road in Mesa
MESA, AZ (September 19, 2020) – Police confirmed that one person died in a suspected DUI crash on Main Street on Saturday evening.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near the intersection of Gilbert Road.
Based on a report, a vehicle was going faster than 90 miles per hour when it crashed into the back of a second vehicle. Subsequently, impact pushed the second vehicle into a cement barrier at the end of a light rail. The first vehicle continued with locked front tires before stopping more than 100 feet past the intersection.
As a result, medics pronounced the driver of the second vehicle dead at the scene. Officials did not yet release the victim’s identity pending kin notification.
Citizens removed the driver from the vehicle and detained him. The Mesa Police Department suspected the driver was impaired at the time of the crash. However, officers continue to investigate the case.
