Officer Jody Makuch Killed, Jason Engel Detained Following DUI Motorcycle Collison on Highway 89A Near South Willard Street
COTTONWOOD, AZ (September 10, 2020)—An off-duty officer riding his motorcycle died Monday after colliding with a DUI driver on Highway 89A at South Willard Street.
According to a Cottonwood Police news release, Officer Jody Makuch was riding his motorcycle around 2:40 p.m.
Around this time, an SUV traveling southbound on the highway swerved left and struck Makuch head-on, causing him fatal injuries.
Per reports, paramedics brought Makuch to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.
As for the 41-year-old driver, Jason Howard Engel, officers believe impairment played a role on his part.
Not long after, officers arrested Engel. As a result, police booked him into Yavapai County jail on suspicion of manslaughter.
