Wrong-Way Driver Causes Fatal Crash on 5 Freeway near Airport Boulevard in Sacramento
SACRAMENTO, CA (August 29, 2020) – Police confirmed that a wrong-way driver died in a head-on crash on northbound 5 Freeway on late Saturday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened just south of Airport Boulevard and north of Highway 99 at approximately 11:52 PM.
Based on a report, the 46-year-old man from Woodland was driving a Honda Accord southbound in the northbound lanes of the freeway when he collided head-on with a Toyota Camry. Subsequently, the Honda became airborne and its left side crashed into a Volvo that was also in the northbound lanes.
Emergency crews pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Officials did not yet release the victim’s identity pending kin notification. In addition, the driver of the Toyota, a man from Sacramento, suffered major injuries and the Volvo driver, a 38-year-old resident of Moore, Idaho, suffered minor injuries. Crews sent both victims to the hospital for treatment.
As of today, no additional information is immediately available. However, the Sacramento Police Department is conducting the investigation.
