Eugene Harbrecht Killed, Louie Villa Hurt, Ricardo Navarro Arrested in Santa Ana Street Racing Crash
SANTA ANA, CA (August 3, 2020) — A 67-year-old man died Thursday following a street racing crash at North Bristol Street and West Santa Clara Avenue.
According to police, Orange County Register editor Eugene Harbrecht was attempting a left turn onto Santa Clara Avenue from North Bristol Street around 11:45 a.m. However, as he tried turning, two vehicles bearing down the street that authorities say were street racing came into contact with his black truck. There, a collision occurred.
According to Cpl. Anthony Bertagna with the Santa Ana Police Department, one vehicle struck a nearby electrical box off the sidewalk and either another car or the same car struck a fence.
Two Good Samaritans who witnessed the crash pulled Harbrecht to safety after a fire erupted. Unfortunately, Harbrecht died after being transported to UC Irvine Medical Center.
Per witnesses, paramedics brought one of the drivers involved in the street race to a local hospital. That BMW driver has been identified as 29-year-old Louie Robert Villa.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Ricardo Navarro who had initially fled the scene is now in custody after police found him near a post office.
At this time, an investigation remains as officers determine any other factors that could have possibly caused the accident.
We would like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and friends of Eugene Harbrecht.
