Fatal Pedestrian Accident at Maytown Rest Area
MAYTOWN, WA (July 21, 2020) – Two people were injured and another killed in an accident at the Maytown rest area Friday afternoon.
At around 1:00 p.m., a Ford Explorer exited the interstate. After that, it struck a pair of pedestrians, two parked cars, and a motorcyclist in the rest area parking lot.
A couple from California were standing outside their Subaru when the SUV struck them. Susan Hye, 73, died at the scene. Police transported William Hye, 68, to Providence Centralia Hospital with minor injuries, along with the motorcyclist.
The rest area closed for three and a half hours on Friday.
Police identified the driver as 28-year-old Jessica Valentine of Winlock.
She was not observed to be impaired and police believe she had a possible medical episode, according to State Patrol spokesperson Ryan Burke. As a result, the driver was not detained. However, the incident is under investigation.
Our deepest condolences are with the family and friends of the victim.
