4-Year-Old Killed in Rollover Accident on Highway 117 [Cibola County, NM]
Child Killed, Six Injured in Single-Vehicle Crash on Highway 117 in Cibola County
CIBOLA COUNTY, NM (June 28, 2020) – Police said that a 4-year-old was the victim who died a rollover accident on Highway 117 on Sunday morning.
According to New Mexico State Police, the collision happened near milepost 36 south of Grants around 4:28 AM.
An initial report showed that a 2003 Ford Explorer was traveling south on the highway prior to the incident. For an unknown reason, it left the roadway and rolled over.
As a result, the impact ejected a four-year-old child who was in the vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt. Officers from the Office of the Medical Investigator pronounced the victim dead at the scene. In addition, emergency crews transported the 18-year-old male car driver, a 27-year-old male, an 11-year-old, an 8-year-old, and two five-year-olds to the Cibola General Hospital for treatment. They also sent an 18-year-old female to the UNM Hospital by air.
Police do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash. However, they continue to investigate the case.
