Joseph Wiley Killed, 2 Riders Hurt after Separate [Santa Maria Motorcycle Accidents
SANTA MARIA, CA (June 29, 2020) — Two separate motorcycle accidents, one near Dominion and Palmer roads and another along East Donovan Road near Highway 101, left a rider dead and two others injured Thursday evening.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Scott Cox, the first accident happened around 7:00 p.m. in the 6300 block of Dominion Road.
Officers learned that 63-year-old Joseph Wiley of Santa Maria died when his northbound 1994 Harley-Davidson motorcycle veered off the road and traveled down a slight embankment.
Investigators believe the Santa Maria man had been traveling about 45 mph with a group of other motorcyclists prior to the accident.
Shortly after, emergency personnel found Wiley unconscious and without a pulse. As a result, they performed CPR on him. However, despite these life-saving efforts, paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Moments later, a 10:00 p.m. crash befell along East Donovan Road near Highway 101. In this accident, a 41-year-old man operating a motorcycle with a 32-year-old female passenger collided with a Honda Accord that had rear-ended their Honda CBR motorcycle.
The pair of riders suffered moderate injuries and were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center.
Investigators ruled out alcohol and drugs as possible factors in the second collision. However, the Honda driver involved was not licensed and could face a citation.
In the fatal crash, detectives believe Wiley sustained a medical emergency. However, an investigation regarding this account remains.
We would like to take this moment to express our condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Wiley.
