Fatal Solo-Car Accident on 5 Freeway Near Highway 516 [Des Moines, WA]
1 Dead in Single-Vehicle Accident in Des Moines
DES MOINES, WA (May 21, 2020) — One person died and another suffered injuries in a solo-car accident on 5 Freeway near Highway 516 early Saturday.
According to news reports, state troopers and paramedics arrived around 3:20 a.m. after receiving news of a serious single-vehicle accident.
In the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near the Highway 516 interchange, officials found a Toyota Scion on fire and with significant damage.
The driver of the Toyota was ejected upon impact and pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, firefighters pulled a passenger from the vehicle and rushed that person to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with severe injuries.
According to investigators, the car drifted off the roadway, struck dirt and spun clockwise before soaring into the air. The impact caused the driver, who initially was traveling northbound on the freeway, to be ejected from the cabin.
Officers at the scene blocked the northbound lanes for cleanup and investigations.
At this time, the details pertaining to what led to the crash, at what speed the car had been traveling and if DUI played a role have yet to be determined.
With deepest sympathies, we would like to send our condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
