Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Car in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 18, 2020) — A woman died Friday evening after a vehicle struck her in a pedestrian accident near Merle Haggard Drive and McCray Street.
According to deputies, the woman, believed to be in her mid-90s, attempted to cross the center median. However, an oncoming vehicle hit her around 5:30 p.m.
California Highway Patrol officials said the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with police investigations.
According to witnesses, the victim was possibly collecting cans and bottles along the roadway. However, as she ran toward the median to collect something, the vehicle struck her in the roadway.
CHP officers said the driver had been traveling the appropriate speed limit, per witnesses’ observations. Although, the trees along the center median might have obstructed part of the driver’s view.
