Rider, Woman Die in Wilmington 110 Freeway Crash
WILMINGTON, CA (May 7, 2020) — A motorcyclist and a pedestrian died Tuesday afternoon following a collision on the 110 Freeway near Pacific Coast Highway.
According to Lance Nieves, a California Highway Patrol officer and spokesman, authorities have yet to determine the cause of the 1:20 p.m. accident that claimed two people’s lives.
A 67-year-old San Pedro man riding his motorcycle just south of Pacific Coast Highway noticed a woman in the roadway. As he attempted to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting her, he ended up striking her, killing them both.
Nieves added that the woman began walking westbound from the right shoulder of the northbound lane. It appears that the motorcyclist struck her between the far left and the second lane from the left.
The crash summoned investigators to the scene, and CHP closed the area for about two hours as commuters relied on Pacific Coast Highway as their main detour.
