Chip Paige Killed, Albert Hayden Injured in Helicopter Accident Near Highway 60 and South Stapley Drive
MESA, AZ (May 1, 2020) — A 55-year-old man died in a helicopter crash last Friday near Highway 60 and South Stapley Drive.
Authorities are investigating what caused the Bell Huey UH-1H aircraft to go down. Reports say that it flew out of Blythe, Calif., around 3:00 p.m. Friday and crashed about an hour later when a part of the helicopter detached for unknown reasons. The helicopter flew toward Falcon Field in Mesa and initially departed from Whiteman Airport in Los Angeles before making a refueling stop in Blythe.
Two people were on board the aircraft and one of them has been identified as Chip Paige—the fatal victim and passenger. The pilot, Albert Hayden, suffered minor injuries in the accident.
According to KNBC in Los Angeles, Paige, a registrant with the FAA as an airline transport pilot, worked as a reporter for the station and ran the helicopter program from 2002 to 2009; however, FAA shows no record of an Albert Hayden.
Thankfully, no one on the ground sustained injuries.
Because information remains limited, the National Transportation Safety Board will be taking the lead on the investigation.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the bereaved family and friends of Chip Paige.
