2 Dead in Car Accident on 8 Freeway and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard [San Diego, CA]
2 People Killed in San Diego Head-On Collision
SAN DIEGO, CA (April 27, 2020)—A head-on collision at the 8 Freeway entrance at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard Sunday claimed two lives.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened just before 1:00 a.m. A driver of a Volkswagen sedan reportedly drove eastbound on the westbound side of the 8 Freeway at the Sunset Cliffs Boulevard exit.
The 22-year-old Volkswagen driver subsequently collided head-on with a Honda Accord that had three occupants.
Unfortunately, the 37-year-old man operating the Honda died at the scene. However, his two female passengers – described as women in their 30s – sustained minor injuries.
At the scene, rescue crews spent half-an-hour attempting to cut the driver of the Volkswagen from the heap of metal. Upon doing so, they transported him to UC-San Diego Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Although the driver sustained serious injuries, CHP officers could not confirm whether the second person who died was the driver of the Volkswagen.
Officials closed the 8 Freeway for several hours as they scoured the scene for any clues as to what led to the crash.
