One Injured in Car Crash on 5 Freeway Near Grapevine [Lebec, CA]
Chemical Spill, Person Airlifted to Hospital Following Lebec Accident
LEBEC, CA (April 2, 2020) — A Wednesday morning car crash on 5 Freeway near the Grapevine sent one person to a hospital and resulted in a chemical spill.
According to reports, a truck hauling 4,000 gallons of ferric chloride solution traveled about 25 miles per hour on the 5 North Freeway. Around 7:00 a.m., a truck subsequently rear-ended it for reasons that demand further investigation.
California Highway Patrol reported seeing heavy fumes and stopped traffic coming from that area. As a result, they summoned Kern County Fire and Kern County Environmental Health to the scene.
There, authorities determined that the crash led to a hazardous chemical spill; however, fortunately, no one made contact with the chemical, which is commonly used in water and sewage treatments and for etching metal.
One person suffered major injuries in the accident, which urged paramedics to airlift the patient to Kern Medical. The person’s updated condition is unknown at this time.
