Christian Chavez-Ponce, Miguel Loya-Sanchez and Jonathan Vazquez-Garcia Die in Two-Car Crash in Phoenix

 
PHOENIX, AZ (August 18, 2020)—Three people died last Thursday following a two-vehicle accident on the 17 Freeway near West Dunlap Avenue.
 
According to DPS officials, the incident happened on the southbound side of the freeway around 5:50 p.m.
 
Investigators say that a truck towing a trailer came to a stop in the carpool lane so its driver could address a mechanical issue.
 
Moments later, a passenger car traveling in the carpool lane struck the trailer while the five occupants of the truck were standing between the trailer and the truck.
 
According to fire officials, three of the five truck occupants died at the scene.
 
DPS officials identified them as Christian Chavez-Ponce, 24, of Phoenix; Miguel Loya-Sanchez, 18, of Buckeye; and Jonathan Vazquez-Garcia, 27, of Tolleson.
 
As for the outstanding two occupants, paramedics brought one to a local hospital with critical injuries while the other one escaped harm.
 
The driver of the passenger vehicle suffered critical injuries, yet the type of injury remains unclear.
