Pursuit Suspect Dies After Jumping from Overpass on 5 Freeway [Anaheim, CA]
Police Pursuit Ends in Deadly Incident on 5 Freeway near Euclid Street in Anaheim
ANAHEIM, CA (July 23, 2020) – A pursuit suspect died after jumping from an overpass on 5 Freeway on late Thursday evening.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened near Euclid Street at 11:30 PM.
Based on reports, the man led authorities in three Orange County cities on a chase prior to the incident. The pursuit began in Fullerton but officers lost sight of the vehicle and called off the chase.
Later on, an Anaheim police helicopter spotted the suspect vehicle in Buena Park and followed it until it exited at Euclid Street in Anaheim. Due to an unknown reason, the vehicle slammed into the left median wall of the off-ramp.
Anaheim police, with assistance from the CHP, ordered the driver out of the vehicle, but the suspect refused. The man later exited the vehicle and jumped from the overpass. Consequently, he landed in the northbound lanes of the freeway.
The man died due to his injuries after falling. The coroner’s office did not release his name pending kin notification.
A multi-agency investigation involving the CHP and Anaheim, Buena Park and Fullerton police departments is underway.
To the family and friends of the victim, we would like to express our deepest condolences to you during this time of heartache.
