Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested After Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash on Loop 202 near Southern Avenue in Laveen Village
LAVEEN VILLAGE, AZ (January 10, 2021) – Police identified Douglas Lee Smith as the victim who was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Loop 202 on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near Southern Avenue around 4:30 AM.
Based on a report, a gold minivan was seen going in and out of lanes on Loop 202. Consequently, it collided with a blue passenger vehicle. Right after the incident, accounts showed that the minivan fled the scene. Witnesses saw it running eastbound through Salt River Bottom.
As a result, 70-year-old Smith, the driver of the passenger car, died in the crash. When the Phoenix fire got on the scene, they performed CPR on the victim before taking him to the hospital. Later on, crews said he succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, Phoenix PD caught the minivan nearby. Fortunately, witnesses positively identified the driver, 26-year-old Marcus Xavier Castro. As a result, officials charged him with reckless manslaughter and leaving an accident with a serious injury. At this point, an investigation into the case is ongoing.
