Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Suspected DUI Big Rig Driver on Highway 76 in Bonsall
BONSALL, CA (December 15, 2020) – Police confirmed that an Oceanside man died in a bicycle crash on Highway 76 on Tuesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened near North River Road around 10:15 AM.
Based on a report, the 58-year-old man was riding a KHS road bike in an eastbound bicycle lane at the time of the crash. Due to unknown reasons, an eastbound Freightliner big rig towing a box trailer struck him from behind. Subsequently, the crash threw the victim onto the roadway.
As a result, CHP and the North County Fire Protection District said the man died at the scene. His identity was not yet available.
Initially, the big rig initially left the scene, but the driver soon returned after finding a safe location to turn the truck around. Investigators later arrested the trucker, a 57-year-old resident of Santa Fe Springs in Los Angeles County, on suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug.
