67-Year-Old Alfred Anaya Killed, 65-year-old Esperanza Anaya Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 97 [Wapato, WA]
DUI Driver Involved in Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 97 near Wapato High School in Wapato
WAPATO, WA (January 1, 2021) – Police identified 67-year-old Alfred Anaya as the victim who died in a wrong-way crash on Highway 97 on Friday afternoon.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened near Wapato High School around 4:45 PM.
Based on a report, the Toppenish man was driving his GMC Sierra north on the highway at the time of the crash. Due to unknown reasons, a 2002 Toyota Tundra driving south in the northbound lanes hit his vehicle.
As a result, Anaya died in the incident. Paramedics took him and his passenger, 65-year-old Esperanza Anaya, to Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital, where the man died. The woman was listed in fair condition. Crews also took the Tundra’s driver, 33-year-old Luberto F. Rodriguez of Yakima, to Yakima hospital.
Troopers said intoxicants were a factor in the crash. However, it is still under investigation.
