Adam Ballerstein Killed, Douglas Bender Arrested in Head-On Accident on Tanque Verde Road [Tucson, AZ]

Wrong-Way Driver Involved in Head-On Accident on East Tanque Verde Road in Tucson

 
TUCSON, AZ (October 9, 2020) – Police identified Adam Ballerstein as the victim killed in a head-on accident in the 8000 block of East Tanque Verde Road on Friday evening.
 
According to the Tucson Police Department, the collision happened at approximately 10:20 PM.
 
Based on a report, 20-year-old Adam Ballerstein was traveling westbound at the time of the crash. Due to an unknown reason, 47-year-old Douglas Phillip Bender, lost control of his white 2012 Jeep Wrangler. Subsequently, he drove from the eastbound lane over a raised median into oncoming traffic, hitting Ballerstein’s 2015 Hyundai Sonata.
 
As a result, Ballerstein died at the scene. Emergency crews transported Bender to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
 
TPD said Bender was driving at high speeds and was impaired at the time of the crash. He is now facing second-degree murder and criminal damage charges. However, an investigation into the case is ongoing.
