Distracted Driving Causes Fatal Multi-Car Crash on Highway 19 near Ajo Way in Tucson
TUCSON, AZ (August 22, 2020) – Police identified Jose Luis Ojeda as the victim who died in a multi-car crash on northbound Highway 19 on Saturday.
According to the Tucson Police Department, the incident happened near Ajo Way.
Based on a report, a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling westbound on Ajo in the second lane toward the highway overpass at the time of the crash. While the traffic was stopped, the Chevy driver swerved and rear-ended a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze. Subsequently, the Cruze struck a Buick Park Avenue that caused it to hit a 2016 Ford Fusion. Lastly, the Fusion struck a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero. Police said the Buick took most of the initial impact.
As a result, emergency crews rendered aid to several victims who sustained injuries. Medics took the driver of the Buick, Jose Luis Ojeda, to Banner University Medical Center, where he died due to severe injuries. He was 59 years old.
Officers said the driver of the Trailblazer was using a cellular phone at the time of the crash. Police cited the suspect for Failure to Reduce and Control Speed to Avoid a Collision and Use of a Handheld Device While Driving Involving a Collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
