Filberto Esparza Involved in Fatal Fiery Crash on Highway 99 [Bakersfield, CA]
Filberto Esparza Involved in Deadly Collision on Highway 99 Near Merced Avenue
BAKERSFIELD, CA (July 23, 2020) – A driver died following Tuesday’s fiery collision on Highway 99 near Merced Avenue.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 10:25 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway.
Arriving officers found a Honda Pilot facing southbound in the center median with significant rear-end damage.
In the investigation, CHP officers learned that 64-year-old Filberto Esparza was heading north in a big rig in the No. 3 lane. Traveling at a speed of 55 mph directly behind another big rig, which exited off Merced Avenue, Esparza’s semi-truck subsequently struck the Honda Pilot.
However, it’s unclear if the Honda Pilot was stopped or moving at a slow rate of speed.
Due to the impact, the Honda burst into flames and the driver died shortly after.
Information surrounding the driver’s identity was not available, but if anyone has more to add on this crash, please contact the CHP.
