Robert Forbes Fatally Struck by Car on California Avenue Near Oak Street
BAKERSFIELD, CA (June 9, 2020) — A man died following Wednesday’s pedestrian crash that took place during a peaceful protest on California Avenue near Oak Street.
Family members have identified the fatal victim as Robert Forbes.
According to reports, Forbes had been among the many peaceful protesters participating Wednesday night.
Police say traffic continued to flow in the eastbound lanes where the posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour. But as Forbes began crossing the street, a vehicle traveling at speeds of 30 to 50 miles per hour, estimated by a witness, struck him.
The driver pulled over and waited for police to arrive. Per reports, he cooperated with investigations and was not arrested.
Investigators say there is no evidence of intoxication or speeding at the time of the accident. Police added that the preliminary collision factor took place in the street where low lighting might have been present; however, more on the investigation continues as detectives ascertain the ultimate cause.
In the meantime, the family members of Forbes have created a GoFundMe page to help raise awareness and funds for his memorial.
Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the bereaved family and friends of Robert Forbes.
