Oscar Pereyra Detained in DUI Head-On Accident in Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, CA (June 8, 2020) — A 31-year old Arroyo Grande man died following Friday’s head-on DUI accident on Highway 154 near West Camino Cielo.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Shannan Sams, the fatal event befell around 10:40 a.m. at the San Marcos Pass Summit.
Investigators learned that an eastbound Toyota Tacoma crossed the double yellow lines and collided with a westbound Hyundai Sonata. The impact sent the Toyota overturning and coming to a rest on its roof.
The crash tragically turned fatal and left the Sonata driver dead at the scene. The coroner’s office will release the victim’s name once the next of kin has been notified.
As for the Tacoma driver, paramedics extricated him from his vehicle and shuttled him to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.
Police confirmed that impairment played a role and arrested the 61-year-old Tacoma driver, Oscar Pereyra, of Santa Barbara.
Following the accident, drivers faced a closure on Highway 154 in both directions for nearly five hours. Wet and foggy weather conditions had been present at the time, yet officials have not confirmed if inclement weather also partook in the accident.
