Maria Ortiz Killed in DUI Car Accident on Highway 1 [Oxnard, CA]
Maria Ortiz Perishes in Oxnard DUI Accident
OXNARD, CA (June 8, 2020) — A 41-year-old woman lost her life following Saturday’s two-vehicle DUI crash at Highway 1 and East Channel Islands Boulevard.
The 7:55 a.m. accident not only claimed one person’s life but left two injured in its wake.
According to California Highway Patrol, a 2017 Nissan SUV was stopped at a red traffic light on northbound Highway 1. A 14-year-old boy had been at the wheel at the time, CHP confirmed, while 41-year-old Maria Perez Ortiz had been the passenger. However, authorities have no insight into why a person so young had been driving.
At some point, a 2000 Lexus SUV driven by a 33-year-old Lake Forest woman heading northbound struck the rear of the Nissan. Officers learned through preliminary investigations that the Nissan driver was not using a seatbelt.
As a result of the accident, Ortiz succumbed to her injuries. Paramedics transported the teen, as well as the Lexus driver, to Ventura County Medical Center with major injuries. In addition, officers learned that intoxication precipitated the crash.
Debris on the roadway and investigations urged officials to close the area and encourage motorists to take Rice Avenue.
No other information was available, but anyone with new details should call investigators.
With heartfelt sympathies, we would like to send our thoughts to the family and friends of Maria Perez Ortiz.
