12 Firefighters Injured in Building Fire at San Pedro Street and Boyd Street [Los Angeles, CA]
Multiple Firefighters Hospitalized After Tackling Los Angeles Building Blaze
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 22, 2020) — A dozen firefighters sustained injuries after a building fire Saturday evening at San Pedro Street and Boyd Street.
The fire occurred in a business building where a supplier for companies makes butane honey oil. Callers reported the fire around 6:30 p.m. when moderate smoke grew apparent. However, when firefighters began evacuating the building due to rising heat and smoke, an explosion occurred.
Witnesses reported seeing firefighters escaping the building with their coats in flames.
According to Dr. Marc Eckstein, LAFD’s medical director, about a dozen firefighters sought treatment at LAC-USC Medical Center and had fortunately been awake and alert on arrival. However, reports say their injuries range from first-to third-degree burns and at least one firefighter needed skin grafts.
Recent reports stated that two firefighters remain in critical condition while six are still hospitalized and three have been discharged. The twelfth firefighter suffered only minor extremity injuries.
Details concerning what caused the blaze remains under investigation. However, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has launched a team to investigate unanswered questions.
To avoid causing a fire, be mindful of any inflammable objects that might pose a threat to your home or building. Above all, always double-check before leaving your property of any risks that can lead to fires or explosions.
